Valley View Elementary School in Northern California has gone wild for recycling and food scraping. Principal Michele Brynjulson called parent Laura Beer, their "one-woman dynamo."
Helping Laura develop the Go Green program is teacher, Elicha Gastelumendi and the Student Council.
This year Valley View has focused on recycling, food scrapping, gardening, and other “green” endeavors that connect to their academic content standards.
Besides recycling, they have:
-
Given away over 500 compact fluorescent bulbs to their school families thanks to PG &E.
-
Trained the entire student body on the implementation of a food scrap program whose composition is shipped to a local composting facility.
-
Encouraged ‘BYOB’ (bring your own bag) behavior, and are trying to eliminate plastic water bottle usage on campus.
-
Been approved for a local grant which will be used in their school garden. Every child will have the chance to weed, plant, and cultivate plant life.
They are proud of the fact that their school alone has been responsible for diverting 120,000 lbs of paper, 2,400 lbs of cardboard, 200 lbs of plastic, and 319 printer cartridges away from landfill.
Valley View is truly green all over!
